You create one small stroke of lightning. One creature you can see within range must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, it takes 1d8 lightning damage.

If you are 5th level or higher, the bolt then arcs to another target within 15 feet, which must also make a saving throw, taking damage on a failed save. At 11th level, the bolt arcs to a third target, and the damage increases to 2d8. At 17th level, the bolt arcs to a fourth target.
